Achievement Without Honor Means Nothing

Winning is cool if it is….

EARNED!

I had a recent incident that kinda blew me out of the water and to you it may sound petty but to me I really did not like what I learned.  But before I get to the moral of the story, I need to give you the background.

…and yes this did really happen to me a couple of hours ago.

I've been playing my boss in racquetball every couple of days.  We recently got into it a couple of weeks ago.  The funny thing is that I have been kicking his arse all over the court.  It's been fun and I am getting a great workout.  Needless to say, I haven't been beating him by a few points.  When I beat him I really beat him, usually I win 21 to 5 or 21 to 4.

Anyway tonight we had reserved the court from 5 to 6 and then he had another employee that had the court booked from 6 to 7.  But by the time we made it out of work it was already 5:30.  The first game went as usual.  Another butt kicking delivered to my boss.

Well I decided to do something different for the second game.  I let him win about 10 points then I started getting serious.  To make a long story short.  I caught up to him.  Well let's just say I got within a few points.  He tried to call the game. Stating that he won and I needed to let the other player play.  My response is that the game is within several points and we should finish up.  He reluctantly agreed.

We continued on.  Here's where it gets funny, and I am going to want your opinion.

So I was on a run and I brought the game within one point.  The score was 18 to 17 - him.  He called the game and said he won.  I was shocked!  I thought since we were so close to 21 that we should just finish.  So, I was more disappointed than anything.  He was like "of well."  And he called the other person in.  She said…"WOW, I didn't realize that you were this competitive."  And then she said "if he is going to get this mad maybe you guys should just finish."  My boss didn't want anything to do with it.

I cleared out and grabbed my stuff.  I was pissed.  Now listen, I know how to lose, I've lost a many a times.  But to be so close to having a decisive winner and not finish, makes me wonder about my boss.

Listen, I know this is petty but seems to me that he shouldn't have declared himself as the winner, when we were so close to the final point.  Seems to me that both of them don't understand that winning without honor is not winning at all.

Now I want your opinion.  Do you think I am being petty or do you think I am onto something?  I believe that winning is achieved by working smart and sometimes hard and often achievement taste the best when it is earned.

Do you agree with me or not?

Please let me know and leave a comment.

GregMeares.com Update

April 20, 2008

If you've been coming to this site on a regular basis, you should recognize a HUGE change.  Actually two major changes.

First, I decided to change the theme I used.  I think this one looks better and presents my ideas more concisely.  Second, and the most importat one, I changed the overall information I decided to present.   Why?

I had been focused on only Wordpress as a content management system and most of my articles focused on that.  Made sense because I'm into that but that is only a small piece or topic that I am into.

So I decided that I would provide a more balanced window into my world.

I organized GregMeares.com under the following assumptions:  The over-riding theme is Leadership and Entrepreneurship.  All topics will role up under that.  Including living a balanced life.  As a result, I share how some of these topics apply to me and my family on a personal level.

I broke down the site into these three main categories:

Within these Top categories, you'll find a lot of information that is appropriate to each main topic.

This type of structure makes it more interesting and easier to read, if you feel so incline to do so.

I have a few areas still under construction, however I am working on them now and should these areas improved in a day or two.

Thanks
Greg Meares
