Why Wordpress is now my Blog of Choice

The more I use Wordpress, the more I love it. It has 2 very important features that Blogger doesn't yet support.
Number 1, you can set up Wordpress to automatically ping all the RSS and blog feed directories every time you make a post. This is a very powerful feature if you want your blog to get a lot of traffic right away. On top of that, you'll be quickly developing backlinks to your blog almost automatically.
Think about how long it can take you to build a regular site, get the search engines to index it, get backlinks to improve your listings, and then start getting traffic. A blog like Wordpress can do all that "grunge" work for you automatically.
Number 2, Wordpress allows the use of Categories. Categories are a very powerful way to improve the structure of your site both for human visitors and for the search engines.
Let's say the topic of your site is Widgets. You could create a Category for black widgets, one for orange widgets, and one for green widgets.
Now when you add posts to your blog, you can choose which of your categories your post belongs to. Now your blog will archive your past posts not only by their month and date, as Blogger does. But also by Category.
So if you have a visitor who is especially interested in green widgets, they can easily find all your posts on green widgets. They don't have to go through your entire archives to find them. With a blog that has been around for awhile and has hundreds of posts, that would be pretty discouraging. Using Categories makes it very easy.
Categories are also very search engine friendly. When you use Categories in your blog, there is a link on every one of your pages to your categories. Think about this: would you rather be #1 in the search engines for March 2003, or for green widgets, one of the main keywords of your site?
By using the Category feature, you will eventually have hundreds of pages on your site with links to green widgets, black widgets, and orange widgets. All those backlinks to those keywords can result in much higher search engine rankings.
Another neat feature is that you can easily create an RSS feed for each of your categories. Then every time you post to your blog, it could be pinging the Blog/RSS directories for each feed!
Compare that to putting up a new page on a traditional website. Even if the search engines find your new page right away, it might be a month or two before it actually gets indexed and starts drawing traffic. It might be a long time before it enjoys a first page position for its keywords.
It's almost amazing how easy all this is with a well-structured blog like Wordpress with Categories enabled!

Making Your First Wordpress Blog

Many people would rather make a blog than a website as it can be a lot easier to maintain and update and has all the same rewards. You can get free blogs so that eliminates any outgoings in the early stages when your site isn?t earning any money. If you put the effort into it you can make some serious money out of a blog if you keep it updated with unique content on a daily basis. Be sure that you don?t copy content from a similar site as this will do you more harm then good and make it harder to become popular.
The best thing about making a blog is that you can use software called wordpress, this allows you to make changes very easily and update it with ease. You can also give people privileges so they can log in and update it for you but are not allowed to change or edit anything sensitive giving you complete security and privacy. Making a wordpress blog is very simple, once you have installed it to your host you can either make your own template or download one of the available themes on the internet which can be used free of charge and away you go!
Once you have done that, make it interesting to get people signing up and returning on a daily basis. You have to make the effort in getting it to rank in the search engines by using basic search engine optimization (seo), but if you do this it will definitely pay off in the long run. You can get many plugins which will make your life easier when it comes to seo.
If you have made your blog very popular and have a strong set of back links you have the ability to sell posts to other site owners which is easy money, you get unique content and get paid for uploading it to your site. The concept is that they integrate some links pointing to their site so they get a quality back link and any targeted traffic you can offer.

How To Get A WordPress API Key For The Akismet WordPress Plugin

With the growing popularity of blogs and the ease to obtain links through comments on blogs, it didn't take long for programmers to come up with automated tools to blast link packed spam comments to unsuspecting blogs.
Some just turn comments off for their blog but to me that eliminates one of the great features of making your blog interactive for your visitors. Comments can open discussion between the reader and the blogger. Your blog's visitors can even subscribe to a post's comments, getting notified of any new comments, keeping your readers coming back.
The WordPress plugin, Akismet checks comments posted on your blog posts against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not.
To activate Akismet from your WordPress blog dashboard, click Plugins, scroll down and click Activate next to the WordPress Akismet plugin. After you do that you will see a box near the top of the dashboard that reads:
Akismet is not active. You must enter your WordPress.com API key for it to work.
Click the link in the message, and then the Akismet Configuration panel will open. You should then see this in the middle of the screen:
Please enter an API key. (Get your key.)
On the top of that page click the Sign Up tab, fill in your information and if you have a self-hosted blog choose the Just a username, please option.
Be sure to use a good email address in here to get your login information and WordPress API key, click the box to agree to legal junk and click next.
Check your email and click the confirmation link from WordPress to activate your account. You should then see a page that reads, "Your account is now active!" Click the login link within the text of that page and login.
You should now be at the WordPress.com site, if so click the dropdown box on the very top right of the page and choose "Edit Profile", now you are in the Global Dashboard.
Within the WordPress Global Dashboard you can now see your WordPress API key on the right side of the page. Oh, and by now you should have also got the API key in an email from WordPress also! But you should still edit your profile while you are in the Global Dashboard.
Now its time to place the API key in the Akismet WordPress plugin; go back into your WordPress blog dashboard, click the link on the Akismet WordPress plugin warning box near the top of the dashboard. Paste the WordPress API key in the box and click update options.
If the warning box is not visible check to see if Akismet is activated, click Plugins and look for the status of the plugin on the right. You will notice that all activated plugins are highlighted green. When Akismet is activated you can configure it by clicking Plugins, and look for the Akismet subpanel (white text in the dark blue bar) directly below and to the right of then main panel menu.
Keeping comment spam out while allowing your blog visitors to comment, will not only keep your blog clean but more interactive and help generate more traffic.
